A Backyard to be Proud of

Last weekend We were able to get the backyard really squared away. It has a direction if not a completely finished appearance.
It is a very eclectic look.  We recycled alot of the materials in the yard. Planters and fence that existed before. An unsightly tree Shane cut down. We are hoping to get the greenhouse started next weekend. This should use the majority of left over lumber from various projects. We have most of the windows free from craigslist. Still need a door and another window to open. The picture to th e left shows the more or less finish section of the yard. Outdoor dining table. We have already used it more than the one in the house. The sod I layed makes the yard look finished. I worked on weeding the patio.
Oliver didn't understand what I was donig to his space but likes where I put the hammock. He can better survey his lands. I used the branches from the cedar, cherry and alder to make Astrid free zones. She is a digger and can't be trusted
good thing she is adorable. The other thing I have done to keep her from destroying the plants is to put wire mesh or chicken wire just under the soil around the roots. I have done this for our blueberries,  kiwis, and the apple tree. Houdini still seems to be getting through my fence and leaving her giant but print in my lavender and mint bed.

The clean up process lead to many remodel finds. Pipes, roof tiles and urbanite, plus a mystery kids car that keeps appearing aybe we have a ghost that needs to play. This corner is where Shane's Shack will go next year but for now it will be the hammocks home. I leveled it somewhat. Then covered it with mulch so I don't have to worry about weeding as much. The dogs don't seem to like it as their toilet either.
The planter we made in April got a face lift today. The color is called mardi gras. I like the pop of color. It is the same color I used on the strawberry planters. I currently only have broccoli kale growing. I will probably plant  seeds tomorrow for the other 2 beds. Beets, carrots, spinach, baby greens, leeks, and more coming soon. These Asrid proof cages are faster to build and more economical that the wire mesh. it ties in with the other side of the garden with my handmade fence around the blueberries. These are easily removable for harvesting.

The strawberry planters Shane built last month. They are brightly colored and growing rapidly.... mmm strawberries. The left over stone filled the space well. It is no time as well done as the main patio but I didn't have the money to rent to rototiller and purchase more gravel so it is more rustic. We did spend 15 bucks for a little more to finish the space. It also looks nice against the purple.

The potatoes are going strong.

Time to Start on the Garden

So now that the house is basically done. I am not sure if a home is ever really complete but for now no major projects inside. I decided to start on the front yard. It is lacking in curb appeal... So I used the broken pieces of concrete chimney/vent to create a tiered flower bed. I guess I am going for an English garden feel. Sticking to purples, whites, reds, and some pinks, for color. I did get a couple of ferns. I also planted Shane's silly fern he rescued from the gutter from our last rental. Pretty...

A Broken Heart

On August 13th 2019... my heart broke. There have been many trying things that have happened in my life but on this day, so far the hardest day I lost my little man, Oliver. It's not that it came as a surprise. We had known for over 4 months he had cancer of his spine. The sadness had overwhelmed me during this time watching him deteriorate. The sadness in his eyes the last week could be unbearable. That is when I would just hold him. We spent the day together, we snuggled, he had some water and a little food. He cried any time I left the room even to get him water. He was happy when Shane got home. He wagged his tale. Shane sat with him about an hour later he crossed the rainbow bridge. Here is where I am. I cry every day. I try to hide it but mostly I function between sadness and anger.  I try to keep my head down and get my job done while at work. We have had some household changes with the addition of my wonderful father in law moving in. I feel bad because I struggle to ke

Vacation 2018 Part 2

Monday September 24th, 2018 To pick up where we left off , we started our day in Portrush, UK. We wole up early had our full Irish breakfast and walked into town to get a coffee.    Ewebert makes his first real appearance. This was our last day in Northern Ireland. We are headed to Donegal. The first thing we hit after we leave town is a restored hill fort. I found it to be a hidden gem. It wasn't something we planned for until the morning we left Portrush. I was looking for something on our way to Donegal.   It was a beautiful rainy find. Cows! We made our way to Donegal town. The main attraction for Shane is it's the home of Hanna's Hats. He got six. We walked around the town, got some hats, had a cream tea, Saw the castle, settled into our B and B. Donegal Castle was small but beautiful. Shane knows his Irish history better than myself. During the famine the  Choctaw Nat
